SUMMARY OF THE POSITION: Must be highly skilled and safety-conscious, the Melter will strictly adhere to safety protocols and is responsible for operating and maintaining an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) to melt, refine, and pour steel in our casting operations. This role is critical to ensuring the production of high-quality molten metal that meets precise chemical and temperature specifications.
Job Responsibilities
· Operate and monitor the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) during melting cycles
· Charge the furnace with scrap metal, alloys, and fluxes
· Operate overhead bridge cranes to transport materials as required
· Sample molten steel and coordinate with the lab to ensure chemical composition meets specifications
· Tap molten steel into ladles safely and efficiently, coordinating with the pouring team
· Maintain accurate records of melt times, temperatures, materials used, and furnace performance
· Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance on the furnace and related equipment
· Adhere to all OSHA and company safety standards at all times, including PPE use, lockout/tagout procedures, and emergency response
· Perform routine start-up and shutdown protocols and report any equipment malfunctions
· Collaborate with maintenance and quality teams to troubleshoot issues and improve processes
Qualifications
· High school diploma, or GED required
· Sound math skills and an ability to read and interpret melt sheets, temperature charts, and lab reports
· Willingness, eagerness, and ability to learn
· Attentive and skilled in safely operating overhead cranes, forklifts, and other heavy equipment
· Excellent attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills
· Physically capable of working in high-temperature environments and lifting to 50 lbs.
Work Environment
· Exposure to high heat, noise, dust, and molten metal, in an indoor foundry and production facility
· Exposure to loud machinery and heavy materials
· Requires wearing PPE: On the foundry floor, this position requires a helmet, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes or boots, flame-retardant clothing, face shields, and hearing protection worn at all times.
Pay Range: $22.00 - $26.00/Hour - Qualifications and experience dependent
Job Location: South Milwaukee, WI
Shifts: 3rd (6:00 PM – 2:30 AM), Qualifies for shift premium
Reports to: Foundry Production Superintendent
